Sethupathi was born in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu on 16th January 1978. His father, Kalimuthu was a civil engineer, and his mother, Saraswathi was a housewife. He moved to Chennai when he was in class 6th and attended MGR Higher Secondary School.
Vijay has 2 brothers (one elder and one younger) and one younger sister. As per his teachers, Vijay was a below-average student. He was neither interested in studies nor in extra-curricular activities. However, he graduated with a B.Com degree from Dhanraj Baid Jain College.
During his college days, Vijay worked various jobs including salesman at a retail store, cashier, phone booth operator, assistant accountant, etc. He then moved to Dubai to pursue a career in accounts.
After coming back from Dubai, Sethupathi joined a Chennai-based theatre group called Koothu-P-Pattarai. Subsequently, in 2006, he was selected to play the role of Dhanush’s friend in the film Pudhupettai.
