Early in his career, Kilmer was a stage actor who turned down a film by famed director Francis Ford Coppola due to previous commitments. His first acting role on screen was in a 1983 episode of ABC Afterschool Special. However, Kilmer’s big break came when he landed a role in the movie Top Secret!
