Travis Tritt was born on February 9, 1963 in Marietta, Georgia to James and Gwen Tritt. His parents divorced when he was a child and later remarried when Travis turned 18. After playing in the church’s Sunday school choir, Tritt became interested in singing and began learning to play the guitar himself. While playing clubs, Tritt began working at an air conditioning company, but later left air conditioning to focus solely on his music career.
In 1982, Tritt married his high school sweetheart Karen Ryon, but they divorced two years later. He then married Jodi Barnett, who was 12 years his senior but divorced shortly after signing with Warner Bros. in 1989. Tritt began recording demos with the help of the Warner Bros. manager. Records, Danny Davenport, who also helped him create a demo album for the label. After the demo album was completed, Davenport sent it to Warner Bros. Warner Bros. was impressed with the album. signed in 1987 and asked him to produce six songs to be released as singles.
