Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Doris Ann and Homer George Gere. His mother was a homemaker while his father was an NMIC insurance salesman who originally wanted to be a pastor. He attended North Syracuse Central High School, where he was a skilled gymnast and musician, playing the trumpet. Gere then went to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship, where he studied philosophy. After attending college for two years, he dropped out without a degree.

Richard Gere was in an ongoing relationship with actress Penelope Milford from 1971 to 1978. From 1978 to 1986 he was associated with the painter Sylvia Martins. Gere was first married to famous model Cindy Crawford in 1991, but the couple separated in 1995. Crawford was one of the most popular models of the 1980s and 1990s. He later married model and actress Carey Lowell in 2002 and they had a son together. Gere and Lowell were married for 11 years before separating in 2013. Richard Gere’s professional career

In 1969, Gere began performing at the Seattle Repertory Theater and the Provincetown Playhouse. His first major acting role was in the original London stage version of the musical Grease in 1973. Gere made her Hollywood debut in the mid-1970s, being cast in films such as Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and Days of Heaven (1978). In 1979, he was one of the first major Hollywood actors to play a gay character in the Broadway production of Bent. He even won a Theater World Award for this performance.
