Leslie Jones was born on September 7, 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was in the US Army but then took a job as an electronics engineer at Stevie Wonder’s radio station in Los Angeles. She also had a younger brother, Rodney Keith Jones, who died in 2009.

Jones started stand-up while he was in college. After her friend entered her into the Funnyst Person on Campus competition and Jones won, she left school and went to Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles, she performed at comedy clubs while also working to make ends meet. She then moved to New York to hone her craft for two years before returning to Los Angeles. Her career started slowly, but she was able to open a tour for Jamie Foxx.
