McCarthy began his political career working for Congressman Bill Thomas from 1987 to 2002. He also served as the Congressman’s District Manager from the late 1990s to 2000. While still on the staff, McCarthy served as president of the California Young Republicans in 1995 and as president of the Young Republican National Federation from 1999 to 2001. In 2002 he was elected to the California State Assembly. In 2003 he became chairman of the Republican Party and in 2006 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives.

Breaking News from Kevin McCarthy
For the first time since 1923, the House of Representatives in the US Congress were unable to elect the Speaker of the House with the required majority. This happened in the first three days of 2023, when representatives from the House of Representatives were tasked with choosing their next speaker for the nation’s 118th Congress. McCarthy was expected to win a majority of the vote and was elected speaker, but no speaker candidate could secure the majority required for his election. The congressional body was effectively brought to a standstill as no candidate could secure a majority of the votes. The House of Representatives must re-vote as many times as necessary until a candidate receives a majority (more than half of the total votes).
The Speaker of the House of Representatives plays an important role and is a single position behind the Vice President to succeed the President in the event that the Commander-in-Chief is unavailable. This happened the first time in 1855, when 133 ballots were required to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the second time in 1923, exactly a century ago. At that time, nine ballots were required to elect a speaker of the House of Representatives.
