Katie Porter was born on January 3, 1974 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Liz Porter and Dan Porter. Her father was a farmer turned banker while her mother was one of the founders of Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting. Katie grew up on a farm and graduated from Phillips Academy. Porter later attended Yale University and majored in American Studies. She graduated in 1996.
Porter married Matthew Hoffman in 2003 and together they have three children. Her husband abused her both physically and mentally, prompting Porter to file for divorce in 2013. She spoke about it in her campaign, saying Hoffman hit her, pushed her one-year-old daughter through the kitchen and threatened to kill herself, and also insulted his family. Katie Porter’s early career
Katie began her legal career working for Judge Richard S. Arnold of the United States Court of Appeals. She also worked at the law firm of Stoel Rives LLP in Portland, Oregon. Porter also served as project director for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges’ Business Bankruptcy Project. She was even an associate professor of law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Law.
Porter then joined the faculty at the University of Iowa Law School as an adjunct professor in 2005 and became a full professor there in 2011. In the same year she became a full professor at the University of Iowa School of Law California in Irvine. In 2012, California Attorney General appointed Kamala Harris Porter as the independent auditor of state banks in a $25 billion statewide mortgage settlement. Her opponent was Republican incumbent Mimi Walters in California’s 45th congressional district, whom she defeated with 53.5% of the vote. In doing so, Porter also became the first Democrat to represent the 45th District or its predecessors since its inception in 1953.
Porter ran for a second term, winning Raths’ 46.5 percent. In doing so, she made history again, becoming the first non-Hispanic Democrat in 38 years to win a second term in an Orange County-based district. Porter won re-election in California’s 47th congressional district in 2022, beating Republican candidate Scott Baugh by 51.6% of the vote.
