In 2004, Bass represented California’s 47th Assembly District and was the only African American woman to serve in the state legislature. She continued to serve in the Legislature until 2010, winning re-election in 2006 and 2008 before her term expired.
When Congresswoman Diane Watson retired in 2010, she encouraged Bass to run for her seat. Bass confirmed his candidacy for California’s 33rd congressional district and won the election with over 86% of the vote. Biden Jr. during his presidential campaign.
