Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California to Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris. His mother is a biologist who came to the United States from India in 1958 at the age of 19 as a graduate student at the University of California. Harris’ father is a Stanford University economics professor emeritus who came to the United States from Jamaica in Britain in 1961 as a graduate student at UC Berkeley. His parents met through the civil rights movement.
Harris met Doug Emhoff, an entertainment rights attorney, in 2013 after a mutual friend went on a blind date. They married in 2014. Harris is a stepmother to Emhoff’s two children from his previous marriage.

Harris began working as an assistant district attorney in Alameda County, California, in 1990 and earned a reputation as a “successful aspiring district attorney.”
In 1998 she was hired by San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan as an assistant district attorney. Kamala became head of the Occupational Crime Unit, where she prosecuted cases of murder, burglary, robbery and sexual assault.
In 2000, Harris accepted a position at San Francisco City Hall and began working for City Attorney Louise Renne. There she led the Family and Children’s Services department, representing cases of child abuse and neglect.
