Biden’s father was wealthy when Joe was a child but suffered business setbacks and later became a successful used car salesman, keeping the family in a middle-class lifestyle.
In 1966, Biden married Syracuse University student Neilia Hunter and they had three children. Neilia and her one-year-old daughter died in a car accident while Christmas shopping in Delaware.
