Shah and one of his assistants, Stuart Smith, were arrested in Utah in 2021 during production of the second season and later charged with conspiracy to wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors say Shah and others sold “business services” to seniors and also provided “leads” to many of those involved in the crime.

Shah and Smith both pleaded guilty to the initial charges, and Shah also maintained his innocence until his most recent court hearing in July 2022. In August 2021, Shah’s legal team attempted to have the charges dropped during a court hearing, but the motion was denied by the judge. In July 2022, Shah changed his original plea from not guilty to guilty.
According to the grievance agreement, the penalty is 11 to 14 years under counseling guidelines. However, due to various demands from his attorneys, Shah is seeking a reduced sentence of three years. The parole board has recommended a six-year sentence in the case, while prosecutors have yet to provide their recommended sentence. Shah is expected to be sentenced in January and faces a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
