In 1997, 35-year-old Protasiewicz married Patrick Madden, a Wisconsin district judge who was 70 and already had three adult children. After graduating from law school in 1988, Protasiewicz joined the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney. She remained in the office for 26 years and also became a member of the workers’ union during her tenure. Election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court 2023

Janet Protasiewicz announced in spring 2022 her candidacy for the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election. Three other candidates ran for the nomination, but Protasiewicz finished first in the bipartisan primaries in February and secured a seat in the general election in April. In the general election, she faced former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly. Janet won the first majority in Wisconsin’s highest court in 15 years after the costliest race in US history for a judge. She will take office on August 1, 2023, succeeding Judge Patience D. Roggensack.

Protasiewicz’s campaigning in the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election focused primarily on abortion rights, with a rights campaigner. In addition, the campaign also focused on gerrymandering, LGBTQ rights and environmental protection.
