In 1997, 35-year-old Protasiewicz married Patrick Madden, a Wisconsin district judge who was 70 and already had three adult children. The marriage lasted only a few months and they divorced that same year. Janet has been married to tax attorney Greg Sell since 2006 and the couple currently reside in the city of Franklin.

Professional background of Janet Protasiewicz
After graduating from law school in 1988, Protasiewicz joined the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney. She remained in the office for 26 years and also became a member of the workers’ union during her tenure. As a union member, Janet has been involved in various protests against Wisconsin Law 10 of 2011, which stripped Wisconsin unions of many bargaining rights.

Protasiewicz first ran for public office in 2013 when she ran for a job as a district judge in Milwaukee County. She campaigned against incumbent judge Rebecca Bradley in the election, but ultimately lost the office to her. When another Milwaukee County judge, Charles Kahn, announced his resignation the following year, Protasiewicz again ran for the vacancy and this time won unopposed. She was re-elected unopposed in 2020 and remains in office. In 2023, Janet is elected Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court 2023
Janet Protasiewicz announced in spring 2022 her candidacy for the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election. Three other candidates ran for the nomination, but Protasiewicz finished first in the bipartisan primaries in February and secured a seat in the general election in April. In the general election, she faced former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly. Janet won the first majority in Wisconsin’s highest court in 15 years after the costliest race in US history for a judge. She will take office on August 1, 2023, succeeding Judge Patience D. Roggensack.
Protasiewicz’s campaigning in the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election focused primarily on abortion rights, with a rights campaigner. In addition, the campaign also focused on gerrymandering, LGBTQ rights and environmental protection. Janet’s election victory has been dubbed a Liberal victory and is likely to play a crucial role in votes on abortion rights and electoral issues in the contested Midwest state.
