Hakeem Jeffries was born on August 4, 1970 in New York, New York to Laneda Jeffries and Marland Jeffries. Her mother was a social worker while her father was a public drug counselor. He also has a younger brother, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, an associate professor of history at Ohio State University and also a renowned author. Hakeem’s uncle Leonard Jeffery was also a noted political scientist, historian, and educator.
Jeffries graduated from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, earning a master’s degree in public policy in 1994. Jeffries entered politics after winning the 2006 New York State Assembly election, defeating Bill Batson and Freddie Hamilton. From 2007 to 2012 he was a member of the New York State Assembly for the 57th District.
In January 2012, Jeffries announced that he would be giving up his seat in the Assembly and running for the United States House of Representatives from New York’s 8th congressional district.
