In October 2020, six men were charged with conspiring to kidnap Whitmer and violently overthrow the Michigan government. After the communications between the far-right group were exposed, the FBI learned of the scheme in early 2020 through tips from a US Army veteran. Seven other men were charged with aiding and abetting conspiracy, including providing material assistance to firearms crimes, terrorist attacks and gang membership. The group used a private Facebook group to discuss the alleged conspiracy. Six of those suspects have been indicted in federal court, while the other seven have been charged with state crimes.
In April 2022, two men were acquitted by federal authorities of all assault charges, while two others were convicted of conspiracy to kidnap in August of the same year.
