Gretchen Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971 in Lansing, Michigan to Sharon H. “Sherry” Reisig and Richard Whitmer. Both parents were lawyers and divorced when Gretchen was only ten years old. Whitmer’s father was chief of the state’s Department of Commerce and worked under Governor William Milliken. He also served as President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from 1988 to 2006. His mother worked as an assistant attorney general under Michigan Attorney General Frank J. Kelley. She has two younger siblings.

Whitmer’s early political career
Whitmer made her first unsuccessful attempt at politics while running for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 1990s. In 2000 she tried again and this time was elected to the 70th House of Representatives. Whitmer was re-elected to the 69th House of Representatives in 2002 and 2004.
In March 2006, Whitmer replaced Virg Bernero (who was elected mayor of Michigan) after winning a special election to the Michigan State Senate. When full-term elections were held in November 2010, Whitmer was re-elected to the Senate. Her party colleagues unanimously elected her Democratic Senate Chair in 2011. Gretchen Whitmer became the first woman to lead a party faction in the Senate.

Whitmer announced in January 2017 that she would be running for Michigan’s 2018 gubernatorial election. In August 2018, she became Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, winning all 83 counties in the state in the Democratic primary. Whitmer’s main opponent in the election was Republican Bill Schuette, whom she defeated by a margin of nearly 10 points. Whitmer again defeated Republican nominee Tudor Dixon and was reelected to a second term as Michigan governor.

In October 2020, six men were charged with conspiring to kidnap Whitmer and violently overthrow the Michigan government. After the communications between the far-right group were exposed, the FBI learned of the scheme in early 2020 through tips from a US Army veteran. Seven other men were charged with aiding and abetting conspiracy, including providing material assistance to firearms crimes, terrorist attacks and gang membership. The group used a private Facebook group to discuss the alleged conspiracy. Six of those suspects have been indicted in federal court, while the other seven have been charged with state crimes.
In April 2022, two men were acquitted by federal authorities of all assault charges, while two others were convicted of conspiracy to kidnap in August of the same year. In October, three other people were found guilty of providing material support to a terrorist attack. Whitmer thanked law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation in a live stream.
