Career breakthrough of Giovanni Reyna
Reyna made her debut for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020, where her team won the game against FC Augsburg by 5-3 goals. Reyna came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, becoming the youngest American player (17 years and 66 days) to ever play in the Bundesliga. The record was previously set by Christian Pulisic.
He scored his first professional goal on the pitch later in February when his side suffered a 3-2 defeat by Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup. This made Reyna once again the youngest goalscorer in the history of the DFB Cup. Reyna is also the third youngest player ever to feature in a UEFA Champions League knockout game.
In his third league appearance of the 2020/21 season, Reyna scored three goals and again became the first American and youngest player in the Bundesliga to score a hat-trick in one of Europe’s five major leagues. In the 2022/23 season, Reyna recovered from a series of injuries and became the first American player to provide two assists in a Champions League game in a 3-0 win over Copenhagen.
Reyna was part of the United States under-15, under-16 and under-17 national teams before making his debut for the US national team in 2020. In November 2020, he was first picked up for the United States senior team for matches against Wales and Panama, but his first goal for the senior team came in the game against Wales Panama, where he got a free kick and didn’t miss the opportunity to score. The American team won the goal 6-2.
Recently, in the March 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Azteca, Reyna dribbled past six Mexican defenders in a single set before being stripped. Reyna’s move earned him comparisons to Diego Maradona’s ‘Goal of the Century’ in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals. The game also took place at the Azteca.
