Denzel Washington was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York. Her mother, Lennis (Wilson), owned a beauty salon and her father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., was an ordained Pentecostal minister and an employee of the New York City Water Board.
When he was 14, his parents divorced and his mother sent him to Oakland Military Academy, a private preparatory school in New Windsor, New York. In 1977 he graduated from Fordham University with a BA in Theater and Journalism.
During the summer of 1976, Washington was working at a summer theater and performing in various plays in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Shortly after graduating from Fordham, Washington made his acting debut in the 1977 TV movie Wilma.
He had a major career breakthrough when he received Dr. Played Phillip Chandler in the 1982–88 season of the NBC hospital series St. Elsewhere. He was one of the few African American actors to appear during the series’ six-year run.
