Bill Murray was born on September 21, 1950 in Evanston, Illinois to Lucille and Edward Joseph Murray II. His father was a lumber seller and his mother a postal worker. Murray has eight siblings, three of whom are actors. When Bill was 17, his father died of complications from diabetes. As a teenager, Murray worked as a golf caddy to fund his high school education. At school he was the lead singer of a rock band and also participated in school and community theater. Murray began his career in the early 1970s with an improv comedy troupe. He then moved to New York to appear as a lead actor on The National Lampoon Radio Hour.
