Bill Murray was born on September 21, 1950 in Evanston, Illinois to Lucille and Edward Joseph Murray II. His father was a lumber seller and his mother a postal worker. Murray has eight siblings, three of whom are actors. When Bill was 17, his father died of complications from diabetes. As a teenager, Murray worked as a golf caddy to fund his high school education. At school he was the lead singer of a rock band and also participated in school and community theater. In 1970, Murray was arrested at an airport for attempted cannabis smuggling and given a suspended sentence.
In the late 1970s, Murray was dating fellow SNL teammate Gilda Radner. In 1981, while filming Stripes, Murray married his first wife, Margaret Kelly. The couple had two sons together. He had an affair with Jennifer Butler while still married to Kelly and thus divorced in 1996. In 1997 he married Butler and they had four sons. He divorced again in 2008 after Butler accused him of domestic violence, infidelity, and sex, marijuana, and alcohol addiction.

Bill Murray’s career
Murray began his career in the early 1970s with an improv comedy troupe. He then moved to New York to appear as a lead actor on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. This show led to his first television role as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1975. Murray rose to prominence in 1976 after collaborating with the TVTV guerrilla video community on several projects. He officially joined the cast of SNL in the show’s second season and stayed there for three seasons from 1977 to 1980.
In 1979, Murray landed his first starring role in the film Meatballs and over the next decade starred in a number of box office hits including Caddyshack, Stripes, Tootsie, and others. Murray began work on a film adaptation of the novel On the Razor’s Edge, which he also co-wrote. To secure funding for this film, Murray agreed to star in Ghostbusters, which became the highest-grossing film and comedy of 1984. “On a Knife’s Edge”, on the other hand, was a box office flop. After the film’s failure, Murray decided to retire from filmmaking to study history and philosophy and to spend time with his family.
Upon his return, Murray starred in the comedy What About Bob? in 1991, which became a box office success. In 1993 he starred in another comedy called Groundhog, which also proved to be a critical acclaim. Murray appeared in several other hits throughout the 1990s and delivered the most memorable performance of his life in the 2003 film Lost in Translation. For his role in the film, the actor won a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and many more, as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Murray has also invested in a number of other minor league teams in the past. Along with his brother Joel Murray, Bill co-owns a clothing brand called William Murray Golf.
