Asa Hutchinson was born on December 3, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas to Coral Virginia and John Malcolm Hutchinson Sr. In 1972, Asa earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting (BA) from Bob Jones University in South Carolina. He then received his Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1975.

Asa Hutchinson’s career path
Asa founded a consulting firm, Hutchinson Group, LLC, in 2005 with partners Betty Guhman and Kirk Tompkins. At the same time, he also accepted a one-year contract with Venable LLP, but later left the contract to focus on his gubernatorial campaign and consulting work. Asa made his first unsuccessful political attempt in 1986 when he ran against incumbent Democratic Senator and former Gov. Dale Bumpers.

In 1990, Hutchinson ran for Arkansas Attorney General against Winston Bryant, but lost in a close race. Hutchinson later became co-chair of the Arkansas Republican Party with Sheffield Nelson. Hutchinson held the position for two years, retiring as undersecretary on March 1, 2005 .
