Asa Hutchinson was born on December 3, 1950 in Bentonville, Arkansas to Coral Virginia and John Malcolm Hutchinson Sr. In 1972, Asa earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting (BA) from Bob Jones University in South Carolina. He then received his Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1975.

Hutchinson has been married to Susan Burrell since 1973 and the couple have four children together. His brother, nephew and brother-in-law are all politicians.

Asa founded a consulting firm, Hutchinson Group, LLC, in 2005 with partners Betty Guhman and Kirk Tompkins. At the same time, he also accepted a one-year contract with Venable LLP, but later left the contract to focus on his gubernatorial campaign and consulting work. Asa made his first unsuccessful political attempt in 1986 when he ran against incumbent Democratic Senator and former Gov. Dale Bumpers.

In 1990, Hutchinson ran for Arkansas Attorney General against Winston Bryant, but lost in a close race. Hutchinson later became co-chair of the Arkansas Republican Party with Sheffield Nelson. In 1996, Hutchinson ran for the third seat in Arkansas’ congressional district and won. In 1998 he was re-elected without any problems, and in 2002 without any objection.

Hutchinson announced his candidacy for governor of Arkansas in 2006. He was elected the Republican Party’s lead candidate, but then lost the gubernatorial election to Democratic nominee Mike Beebe. He was again a candidate for the 2014 election and this time won the election for the 46th governor of Arkansas.
