Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937 in Port Talbot, Wales to Annie Muriel and Richard Arthur Hopkins. Her father was a baker while her mother was a housewife. Hopkins was not a particularly gifted student during his undergraduate years and was more interested in painting and drawing or the piano than in study. Anthony met Welsh actor Richard Burton at the age of 15, which inspired him to pursue acting. After spending two years in the British Army, he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Hopkins was married to actress Petronella Barker from 1966 to 1972. After his divorce from Barker, Hopkins married Jennifer Lynton in 1973. After divorcing in 2002, he remarried in 2003 to Stella Arroyave. Hopkins has a daughter from his first marriage, but is not closely related to her.

First acting career
In 1960, Hopkins had his stage debut with the play “Have a cigarette”. In 1983 he became a member of The Mirror Theater Ltd’s Repertory Company. Two years later he starred in the play “The Lonely Way” across from Colin Firth. Hopkins also acted in David Hare’s production of King Lear at the National Theatre, which was also his favorite Shakespearean play. Hopkins’ last stage appearance was in a 1989 West End production of Mr. Papillon”.
Hopkins had his cinematic breakthrough in 1968 with the film The Lion in Winter. Anthony was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film. He then appeared in the 1970 neo-noir action thriller The Looking Glass War and the 1971 action film When Eight Bells Toll. In 1992, Hopkins starred in the Merchant Ivory-produced film Howard’s End, which again received critical acclaim. In 1993 he starred again in Merchant Ivory’s The Remains of the Day, which was ranked 64th among the best British films of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. For the latter, Hopkins was again nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. In 2001, he took on the role of Hannibal Lecter in the Hannibal series of The Silence of the Lambs. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film broke international box office records and grossed $351 million. The third part of the film “Red Dragon” (2002) also received good reviews and was a box office success.
In 2019, Hopkins played the role of Pope Benedict XVI. in the highly successful film The Two Popes. Hopkins chairs the National Trust’s Snowdonia Appeal and has helped raise funds for the preservation of Snowdonia National Park in Wales. He has also donated £2.3million towards the refurbishment of a grand piano at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. The wing is called the Anthony Hopkins Center because it was also his alma mater. Hopkins is also a member of Greenpeace, an environmental protection group. In 2008, Anthony appeared in a television advertising campaign to raise concerns about whaling in Japan.
