Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937 in Port Talbot, Wales to Annie Muriel and Richard Arthur Hopkins. Her father was a baker while her mother was a housewife. Hopkins was not a particularly gifted student during his undergraduate years and was more interested in painting and drawing or the piano than in study. Anthony met Welsh actor Richard Burton at the age of 15, which inspired him to pursue acting. After spending two years in the British Army, he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

First acting career

In 1960, Hopkins had his stage debut with the play “Have a cigarette”. In 1983 he became a member of The Mirror Theater Ltd’s Repertory Company. Two years later he starred in the play “The Lonely Way” across from Colin Firth. Hopkins also acted in David Hare’s production of King Lear at the National Theatre, which was also his favorite Shakespearean play. Hopkins’ last stage appearance was in a 1989 West End production of Mr. Papillon”.

In 1992, Hopkins starred in the Merchant Ivory-produced film Howard’s End, which again received critical acclaim. In 1993 he starred again in Merchant Ivory’s The Remains of the Day, which was ranked 64th among the best British films of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. For the latter, Hopkins was again nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor.
